We had the distinct pleasure to interview award winning designer Tianyi Shi about their original and creative Light design work. Tianyi Shi is an award-winning industrial designer, that makes our world a better place with their original light works.
Tianyi Shi ("TS") answered Design Interview ("DI") questions about their award-winning work Soft Light. Interview questions prepared by Frank Scott.
TS : The design inspiration comes from how I felt when I used an ordinary foam to clean my house. When I touched it, I felt softness and warmth. I tried to push it to change its shape, but I never succeeded – it always returned to its original square, like a stubborn child playing game with me. It is that feeling that attracted me, so much that I thought the foam could be a member at home. Therefore, I began to try to accomplish a household product made of foam.
TS : I would like my work could company users through the character of foam. When you feel lonely, you could play with it. It seems be nodding or bowing when the foam cover is pressed. Besides the fun of playing with it, some interest can be found when it is quiet too. The light through the yellow sponge is naturally dim, leaving home in quietness and warmth. Looking into the large or small pores on it and the lights coming out of them is a nice way to spend boring time.
TS : About 4 monthes.
TS : Because I hope to establish a deeper intimate relationship between product and users from the angle of sensations and interactive experiences. Apart from the basic functions,product can understand and care the owners with unique missions, which brings happiness and entertainment to them when they feel boring and solitude.

TS : The name is come from character of my light. It is made by foam and very soft. Soft is a very unique character which make my light different from other lights. So the name is soft light.
