We had the distinct pleasure to interview award winning designer Ufuk Seçgel about their original and creative Material Handler Excavator design work. Ufuk Seçgel is an award-winning industrial designer, that makes our world a better place with their original material handler excavator works.
Ufuk Seçgel ("US") answered Design Interview ("DI") questions about their award-winning work Janus Material Handler Excavator. Interview questions prepared by Frank Scott.
US : The main idea is to design a heavy-duty work machine able to adapt to future workspaces.
US : I wanted to achieve a vehicle design that looked different from the standart excavator designs. I wanted it to be a different vehicle.
US : Around 2 months.
US : It was a school project. So I think a bit of both.
US : Recycling centers, construction companies and other material handling industries.
US : The design changes the anatomy of an excavator. It is out of the standart excavator design. The target audience wanted this vehicle to be different than other vehicle which are mainly used for construction work.
US : Janus is the Roman god of beginnings and transitions. He is depicted as having two faces, one looking to the future the other looking to the past. This echoes with how the vehicle has two faces and also to me it echoes with the general concept of recycling.
US : Having a travel and work mode and a rotating operator's cabin for transitioning between modes.
US : I gathered knowledge from maintenance companies for these vehicles. The main knowledge I sought was the connection of the engine from the turret to the lower body of the vehicle. This knowledge enabled me to transfer the engine to the lower body and make the weight more balanced.
US : It was especially difficult to get out of the standart design of these machines.
