Interview with Mary Zayman at Sunday 13th of April 2014: DI: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
MZ : I aspired to design a ring that has the same integrity as any part of the natural world. All forms in nature have an inner logic and are a perfect union of form and function..

DI: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
MZ : The focus, which emerged during the making of the piece, was to make it interesting from every angle, and to invite the viewer to turn it around and experience it fully. I wanted to it to enrich the wearer’s experience. . If I can give someone even a fraction of the joy to be experience in nature I feel I have succeeded.

DI: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
MZ : My plan is to see where this design takes me. My short-term goal is to get it into the world to be enjoyed.

DI: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
MZ : Moon Curve one in series of rings that I worked on for six months.

DI: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
MZ : The concept developed during the design and making of the piece. The inspiration occurred before and during the making of the piece and is my own.

DI: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
MZ : Myself.

DI: What made you design this particular type of work?
MZ : It developed organically from some forged rings I was making at the time. I was interested throughout the series in starting with a length of wire and forging it.

DI: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
MZ : I am more influenced by nature but I also believe that every experience we have ever had, every color, sound, and emotion becomes part of who we are, and in this way become part of our work.

DI: Who is the target customer for his design?
MZ : Anyone who appreciates or gets something from it.

DI: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
MZ : I think the painstaking attention to each and every angle, so that the piece as a whole hole is infused with liveliness.

DI: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
MZ : On one level the name is obvious in that is curved and has a moonstone as the focal point. Beyond its descriptive function I like the sounds of the two words together.

DI: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
MZ : Hammers, mandrels, burs, and various other Flex Shaft attachments.

DI: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
MZ : The union of opposites: strength with delicacy, and dynamic movement with balance.

DI: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
MZ : Moon Curve was designed solely by myself.

DI: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
MZ : The machines I use such as a Flex-shaft, and the processes of casting involve technology.

DI: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
MZ : I am always studying forms in nature and their underlying principals. I am fascinated by Leonardo da Vinci's studies of plants, human anatomy, and inventions.

DI: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
MZ : Cleaning up the casting that had many tiny crevices that were difficult to access. Even though it was frustrating at the time I learned a lot from it.

DI: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
MZ : I am drawn to much of the European and International art including jewelry. This is a generalization but I see more jewelry that I can relate to in terms of originality and integrity.

DI: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
MZ : I learned to work on a piece until it speaks to me. By staying with the process I improved my patience and concentration.

DI: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
MZ : No, I think that about does it.
