We had the distinct pleasure to interview award winning designer Agne Balke about their original and creative Writing Desk design work. Agne Balke is an award-winning industrial designer, that makes our world a better place with their original writing desk works.
Agne Balke ("AB") answered Design Interview ("DI") questions about their award-winning work Herringbone Writing Desk. Interview questions prepared by Frank Scott.
AB : Design of the desk “Herringbone” was inspired by Baltic folk motifs. The main idea was to use the customized pattern in furniture manufacturing and design.
AB : To create a simple yet functional writing desk with discreet storage places that wouldn't obstruct the harmonious flow of the decorative pattern.
AB : I want to find a company that will produce and market this product on license worldwide.
AB : It was my first own project. I did it for a free time, so it took about year from idea, sketches to manufactured real project. Now I create everything faster.
AB : I wanted to use that pattern in design because I like it very much. This project was from my inspiration and I created it exactly as I wanted.
AB : I'm open for companies who could produce and market my writing desk.
AB : The main pattern which I used is called Herringbone. That is why I gave name for the writing desk.
AB : Paper, pencil, 3d program, software for drawing technical drawings.
AB : The most unique aspect is pattern which surrounds the writing desk and its functionality. Behind the pattern there is a hidden drawer with push-to-open system.
AB : Design I created by myself, but some decisions I had to make with colleague for manufacturing.
AB : It was a big role. Because I had to think how to frame pattern between two thin stripes and make it stable at the same time. Also it was also a question how to make Herringbone pattern sharp, because CNC makes a 3 millimeters radius inside the ornament.
AB : How to make it look aesthetics and at the same time functional.
AB : I was looking for competitions to submit my project worldwide.
AB : After that I created other writing desks which I like too much easier.
