Interview with Terence Simmons at Sunday 15th of May 2011: DI: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
TS : I came up with this design while on crutches. My old back pack was uncomfortable when I used my crutches, so I altered it to go through my hoodie, and the swack concept was born.

DI: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
TS : My main focus was functionality, I wanted it to look good and be functional as well.

DI: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
TS : Keep enhancing it with different colors and newer generations.

DI: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
TS : It took me about 4-6 months to get it perfect.

DI: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
TS : Like I mention in the previos question I came up with this design when I was on crutches.

DI: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
TS : My design is now for sale at swackonline.com, and I wouldn't mine selling or leasing the production rights. This design is patent pending.

DI: What made you design this particular type of work?
TS : I designed this particular item off of a concept I came up with when I was injured.

DI: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
TS : No.

DI: Who is the target customer for his design?
TS : My target customer is the youth(kids, teens of either gender)

DI: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
TS : There is nothing similar to this in the world, at least that I know of.

DI: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
TS : The name comes from the fusing of the words SWeater pACK.

DI: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
TS : I had a my mom sew a concept together for me.

DI: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
TS : The unique aspects of this design is the hidden straps of the backpack. If you look at the design from the front you can't tell that your wearing a backpack.

DI: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
TS : I worked with this young amazing designer.

DI: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
TS : velcro, quick snaps.

DI: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
TS : No.

DI: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
TS : Finding a factory who could produce the design.

DI: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
TS : I seen the A'Design award mentioned on Yanko.com website.

DI: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
TS : I live in Chicago, il. I learned how to design and produce and item through this whole process.

DI: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
TS : I am submitting the 2 Gen Swack Fusion Pack to the A'design award so look out for that next year.
