DI: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
: Herculano was inspired by first century furniture from the Roman Era.
DI: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
: Herculano was intended to reflect on the rich traditions of history with its rich textures and intense coloration.
DI: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
: Herculano will be produced in a limited edition.
DI: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
: Herculano was first conceived in 2016, after two years of study of first century furniture.
DI: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
: Herculano was the culmination of two residencies in Italy studying Roman furniture.
DI: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
: I will be producing a limited edition of the Herculano table.
DI: Who is the target customer for his design?
: Waiting rooms in Corporate offices.
DI: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
: It is a version of the city of Herculaneum the buried city that inspired its design.
DI: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
: Rhino 3D was used to perfect the proportions and generate the cutting lines.
PhotoShop was used to create the etching images.
A Trotec Speedy 500 laser cutter was used to etch images in the table top
DI: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
: The combination of laser etching and flame charred wood surface.
DI: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
: Many thanks to my colleagues at Purdue University for critiques and suggestions in the design of this table. Special thanks to Laura Drake, David Marchese and Rick Paul.
DI: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
: I wanted to share this design and its story with the world.
DI: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
: This project let me understand the history of furniture is long and we can learn a lot from those who came before us.
